GLMA Affiliates AASL & ISTE
The Georgia Library Media Association is affiliated with two professional organizations that cover every aspect of the library media specialist profession. AASL (American Association of School Librarians) and ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) encompass the range of educational challenges that each of us will encounter during the school year. Each of these organizations has a helpful web presence, so be sure to explore and use their web resources. Please make sure that as a professional you are familiar with the following standards.
The mission of the American Association of School Librarians is to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library field.
There is a wealth of information located on the AASL Guidelines and Standards webpage.
Learning4Life: Innovative national implementation plan for AASL’s learning standards and program guidelines.
ISTE advances excellence in learning and teaching through innovative and effective uses of technology. The National Educational Technology Standards have been developed for students, teachers and administrators.
NETS•S: The skills and knowledge students need to learn effectively and live productively in a digital world.
NETS•T: The skills and knowledge educators need to change the way they teach, the way they work, and the way they learn in an increasingly connected global and digital society.
NETS•A: The skills and knowledge school administrators and leaders need to lead and sustain a culture that supports digital-age learning, builds a vision for technology infusion, and transforms the instructional landscape.
Both these organizations have excellent conferences where participants can network, collaborate, and rejuvenate. If you cannot attend, both have large conference web participation, so the resources are available online. Try to attend each of these conferences at least once in your career, though if you go once—I know you will want to attend more.
