North Central District GLMA Meeting

GLMA North Central District held their first meeting of the 2009-2010 school year on September 3, 2009 at the North Georgia RESA facility in Gilmer County.  Cherokee County media specialists provided morning munchies as we welcomed all the participants.  Our theme for this year’s meetings is Flip this Library: Create an Inviting, informative, and FUNctional learning center!  Media specialists discussed the changes needed to become relevant to today’s user – allowing our patrons to use our resources on their terms, to construct whatever they want, whenever they want, wherever they want.

Following morning announcements, Rebecca Amerson, GLMA State Treasurer, introduced the attendees to Discovery StreaminGALILEO.jpgg and all the wonderful changes Discovery has implemented, including a web 2.0 look and feel as well as new search capabilities.  Courtney McGough, GALILEO expert, then presented a webinar introducing the participants to the new GALILEO Toolbar as well as answering all questions pertaining to GALILEO.

After lunch, participants participated in a Collaboration Corner, where participants divided into smaller groups by level (Elementary, Middle, High) and a volunteer led the sessions by sharing “Best Practices”.  We then were delighted to have Judy Serritella present a DOE Update, providing relevant information on all things media as well as introducing us to Carmen Deedy’s new treasure, 14 Cows for America.

The afternoon wrapped up with reminders that our October 29th meeting will be at North GA RESA with special guest ReLeah Lent, author of five book titles including At the Schoolhouse Gate:  Lessons in Intellectual Freedom.Little Organ Annie.jpg
