GLMA North Central District Report
GLMA North Central District held their first meeting on September 4, 2008 at the North Georgia RESA facility in Gilmer County. Cherokee County media specialists provided morning munchies as we welcomed all the participants. Our theme for this year’s meetings is Welcome to our Kitchen: A Recipe for Success.
Morning munchies were all related to a book title: Thunder Cake from Patricia Polacco’s Thunder Cake, peanuts and cracker jacks from Take Me Out to the Ball Game, etc.
Following morning announcements and the introduction to TeachingBooks.net, all participants moved to the computer lab to be introduced to a Web 2.0 tool called del.icio.us. This tool allows you to “carry’ your Favorites with you, no matter where you are. Media specialists set up del.icio.us accounts and bookmarked favorite sites including the GLMA Blog, Judy Serritella’s DOE web page as well as TeachingBooks.net.
After lunch, Judy Serritella joined us for an update on all things media in the state of Georgia as well as sharing some favorite stories. Judy shared news from GALILEO, Kathy Cox, Media Newsletters, Georgia Read More and funding/budget news.
All meetings include a “Best Practices” session where participants divide into smaller groups by level (Elementary, Middle, High) and a volunteer leads the sessions by sharing “Best Practices” she has used and then encourages sharing by the other level attendees.
With the advent of meetings this year, all news and announcements for the North Central District has moved to a wikispace page. Participants were introduced to the new format at wikispace plus asked to contribute ideas as well as recipes.
The new address is https://glma-nc.wikispaces.com.
The afternoon wrapped up with door prizes and volunteers from Pickens County providing morning munchies for the October 30, 2008 meeting at the North Georgia RESA facility.
