GLMA North Central District News

Kelly Bingham

GLMA North Central District had their largest attendance at their meeting on January 31st, 2008 with forty participants attending the third meeting at the North GA RESA facility in Ellijay.  Gilmer County media specialists provided morning munchies as we welcomed all the participants.  Our first order of business was to draw the teams for the Northern District Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl on February 9, 2008.  Karen Gurty, co-chair for the Northern District, utilized the attendees to draw the team names to determine the schedule for the 6 games on the 9th.

All meetings include a “Best Practices” session where participants divide into smaller groups by level (Elementary, Middle, High) and a volunteer leads the sessions by sharing “Best Practices” she has used and then encourages sharing by the other level attendees.

Following a short break, attendees then saw the “new” GALILEO by participating in a webinar with Karen Minton, GALILEO staff member.  Participants were able to view the new “look” for GALILEO as well as ask Karen questions and voice their comments about the new interface.  Brief announcements followed – introducing the participants to the new GLMA blog, Library Media Specialist of the Year information as well as the Mabel Wyche Underwood Grant information.

Kelly Bingham, author of Shark Girl, joined the participants for our Box Lunch and conversed with the attendees.  After lunch, Kelly gave an insightful presentation about the writing process and the road to publication.  She entertained questions from the participants as well as autographing books the attendees brought.  Shark Girl was a SLJ Hot Picks 6/6/07 and was also featured in Judy Serritella’s Media Matters August 2007.

After Kelly’s presentation, Rebecca Amerson, state treasurer for GLMA as well as a NBCT, introduced the attendees to NoveList, a wonderful database available in GALILEO that provides everyone with information about all types of fiction books, series, authors plus much more.  We concluded the afternoon with a brief session on copyright, sharing resources for purchasing out-of-print materials.

During the day, all attendees complete a “Reflection and Feedback” card.

They are asked to record 1 concept they learned today and 1 concept/idea they shared today.

These completed cards are used to draw door prizes as the meeting concludes.

Our last meeting for the year will be May 1st, 2008 at Clear Creek Middle School in Gilmer County.

  1. It was a great day! If you have not read the poetry novel, Shark Girl, add it to your list! It is a quick read and approaches this sensitive topic from every possible viewpoint.
