Look what I found!
Don’t you love to discover a treasure when you are looking for something else entirely?!!
This is a newspaper clipping from 1929. I was not aware of this title at all! It has 322 pages and I’d really be interested in the table of contents! There are several copies available from Alibris or ABEbooks.com…..if anyone is interested!
This image is #76 from the Historical Broadsides collection in the Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia. They are divided into decades since the early 1800’s. Another of my favorite collections at Hargrett is their World War Posters. A Java DjVu plug-in is required to view, but just download it from the link provided.
Happy exploring!

GALILEO Resources for Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated from September 15 to October 15, is just around the corner. If you need some resources to share with students and teachers, GALILEO includes quite a few for this celebration.
Encyclopædia Britannica includes a spotlight, Hispanic Heritage in the Americas, which offers profiles of Latin American countries, biographies of famous Hispanic American figures, an overview of the culture and history of Latin America, historical documents, multimedia, editorially-selected websites, and learning activities for ages 10 and up.
SIRS Discoverer offers articles and images for elementary and middle school students. To see these, go to SIRS Discoverer, click on Spotlight of the Month, and scroll down to see the archive of spotlights. SIRS Issues Researcher also includes articles, documents, images, and websites for Hispanic Heritage Month. Go to SIRS Issues Researcher, click the Database Features, and click the Spotlight On… section. Scroll down to the bottom to see next month’s spotlight or the archive of past spotlights.
A search for resources in History Reference Center reveals several interesting articles and book chapters, including an article about recently-appointed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the literary language of U.S. Hispanics, and the history of Hispanic immigration as well as ideas for teaching about migration and race from a Latino historian’s perspective.
For biographies of Hispanic American authors along with plot summaries, reviews, and literary criticism, go to Literary Reference Center. Click the Advanced Search and leave the search box blank, but scroll down to the Literary Author’s Cultural Identity box to search for resources about Cuban American, Latino or Latina, Mexican American, and/or Puerto Rican American authors.
NoveList and NoveList K-8 offer an article for elementary level reading, Exploring Hispanic Heritage in Children’s Literature, along with great recommendations for books set in Latin American or books portraying Hispanic culture for all grade levels. Oh, and take a little time to check out the new look and, more importantly, the new features!!
Finally, GALILEO does include a few Spanish-language resources. Check out the Spanish/Español Resources area under Browse by Subject in High School and in Teen.
Do you have a favorite resource for National Hispanic Heritage Month? Leave a comment and share it with others.
As always, if you have questions or comments, please Contact Us.

Digital Citizenship Survey
from Gordon Baker:
Dear Educators and Administrators,
We hope this email finds you off to a great start for the 2010-2011 school year. We are preparing to write an article on digital citizenship for Tech Trends Magazine. We are asking you to help us collect some vital information about digital citizenship in your school and/or district by completing a short survey of nine questions. We value your time and privacy and have made this survey short and confidential. We will use the data collected to gain knowledge about if and how digital citizenship is being taught in our schools nationwide as well as internationally. We thank you for your time and hope you have a great year.

Making the Case for Evidence-Based Practice
Three of our own GA media specialists (Joanne Bates, Janelle McClure, and Andy Spinks) have just had this terrific article published in the August-September 2010 issue of LMC (pages 24-27). They used a very clever legal theme to present this important topic at COMO last year and then wrote it up for everybody in the profession.
Using data to inform our practice and demonstrate what the media program contributes to student learning are critical concepts these days. Thanks Joanne, Janelle, and Andy for sharing your strategies with all of us!
