The February 2008 Media Matters newsletter will be available on the GaDOE website within a day or so and will also be posted on the soon to be defunct GLC website. The new and improved Library Media page will go live on February 4th and you will be able to find it under Standards, Instruction, and Assessment in the Curriculum area. In this month’s newsletter is information on the Exemplary Library Media program (the deadline for nominations is February 1), the Children’s Literature Conference, outstanding Library Media WebPages, the Peach Award, training opportunities on GALILEO, Top Ten Issues from Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education (GPEE), Pope and Druid Hills High Schools, a Georgia author you may not be familiar with, an opportunity for high school students, and much more.
GPEE asked me to share the Top Ten Issues for 2008 with the state’s media specialists and I was happy to do so, but I also asked them to please think about making Library Media programs one of their Top Ten Issues in the future. They responded by asking me to nominate some outstanding elementary literacy programs for their 16th annual Bus Tour. If you are interested and have an innovative and exemplary early literacy program, let me know at jserrite@doe.k12.ga.us. This could be our time to shine!
The customizable newsletters are always popular and a wonderful way to promote your Library Media program. I hope you will be able to attend Library Legislative Day on February 14th. This is a wonderful opportunity to speak to our representatives, meet our colleagues in the public library and higher ed sector, and promote our library programs.
The Character Education DVDs have been distributed to all K-12 public schools. This is an excellent resource for our students, classroom teachers, and counselors. Please make sure your faculty and staff are aware of this addition to your collection. At this time, every Library Media Center should have 6 DVDs. Two additional DVDs are available for purchase from FilmClips. For more information, you can check out their website at www.filmclipsonline.com
